The first time I've ever been on a bus tour in another country was when I was 15. Our family went to Hong Kong and we were on this fast track tour of the city, so many places, so little time. My favorite part of the trip was when I was wondering the city alone. This gave me an unreserved tour of the city, wandering into busy markets and even to an underground gambling arcade. I was unable to understand the language but able to decipher the fact that everyone was just in a hurry to be somewhere. The only people who took time to ponder at the scenes were the tourists and even they were restrained to 15 minute stops and tourist traps. From that trip on, I always looked the other way every time I was invited to an idea of another bus tour. I was convinced that the only way I would truly experience a city was to not follow the herd and break out from the shackles of consumerism.
I recently went on a bus trip to Northern California. I did it because I would get to spend time with some special people. It was a revelation, I actually enjoyed myself. Yet I found myself with a collection of photos that reflect the tired emotions that some of my fellow travelers felt when all they did was follow the leader.
