Chicago greeted me with a dark winter night. Cold was the wind, and the snow was abundant. As I walked along the streets, I could hear the train rattle the old and rusty steel suspensions. Brick buildings stood tall beside wooden Victorian houses adorned with leafless trees in their tiny front yards. It was an uninviting sight yet people brave the hawk's bite one by one and in pairs. As night turns into day, I kept on walking. This time along the shorelines of lake Michigan named after the state of great lakes. Modern buildings would stand in contrast as a sign of the changing times, yet the inhabitants of this land still remain true to their identity as a people.
The sun was shining that day,but not the heavy clothed, snow drenched faces of the people. It seemed as if the city had captured them in the intertwining branches and vines but not without hope out of sight. Columns stood tall and cast shadows that block the path of dauntless travelers. While skyscrapers pierced the clouds above the midtown bustle. The buildings all looked like soldiers to me, ushering in era after era of development after conflict. And then I saw the city smile, saying that no matter how imperfect it was, it was exactly how I wanted it to be. Full of reminders that once upon a great time, this city flourished and in all reality, is actually still flourishing.
I love how Chicago made me feel. Cold but welcomed.
